The method involves controlling an electromagnetic actuator with a control signal, where the control signal exhibits a control signal time interval that is assigned to an amplitude value that is different from zero. The actuator is formed by a magnetic coil (102) and an armature (104). Valve dwell time is regulated, where the dwell time represents a temporal deviation between the control signal and an actual change of an operating condition of a component i.e. valve needle (116). The amplitude value of the control signal time interval is adjusted to a desired value. An independent claim is also included for a controller for operating a valve i.e. injection valve of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
