The method involves applying voltage (Up) to a pump cell (118) comprising two electrodes (114, 116) and a solid electrolyte (112) in a measuring phase, where one of the electrodes (114) is arranged in a hollow chamber (120). Current (Ip) i.e. limiting current is measured by the pump cell in the measuring phase. The current is changed around a predetermined value in another measuring phase. Voltage change occurring due to the current change is measured. Evaluation of a parameter of a gas is completed from the current and voltage change. An independent claim is also included for a sensor arrangement for determining a parameter of an exhaust gas in a measuring gas chamber.
