The arrangement has a lighting unit (L) e.g. LED, and an optically effective structure (2) inserted into a surface of a component (1) to be illuminated, where the component is designed transparently. The component is designed as a windowpane, intermediate washer or a cover plate of a rear light, vehicle headlight and/or a running light of a vehicle. The optically effective structure is designed in the form of rods, which project from the surface of the component. Light emitted from the LED is coupled to the component over total reflection.
