A method and system for operating a throttle system include a throttle body that generates a throttle position sensor signal and encodes the throttle position sensor signal to form a coded throttle position sensor signal. The system also includes an electronic control module that receives the encoded throttle position sensor signal from a throttle body, forms a first mock throttle position sensor signal and a second mock throttle position sensor signal from the encoded signal, and forwards the first mock throttle position sensor signal and the second throttle position sensor signal to a diagnostic module.
