The method involves measuring capacitive load before ignition operation or nominal operation of a lamp, calculating an impedance value from the capacitive load, and storing the impedance value. The measured capacitive load is considered in an ignition phase and/or during regulation of current- or power of the lamp after ignition of the lamp. An error signal is outputted to an operating device (4) and/or to a bus when the measured capacitive load lies above a defined reference value, such that the ignition operation of the lamp is prohibited. An independent claim is also included for an integrated control circuit e.g. micro controller, for implementing a method for operating an operating device for a lamp.
