The interface (SB) has a transmission branch (SZ) transmitting digital signals or power supply voltage signals to external terminals (K, K'), where the interface is integrated into a housing of an operating device. The terminals receive the digital signals or power supply voltage signals from a push-button or a switch over a receiving branch (EZ). A transformer (Tr) supplies energy to the interface in a transmission mode and in a receiving mode, and operated in different frequencies. The transformer is connected with a filter circuit having an output that is connected with the switch. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a bidirectional interface.
