The circuit has an exhaust gas recirculation heat exchanger (6) arranged in series with an exhaust gas recirculation valve (5), and a by-pass branch (8) for by-passing the heat exchanger. The by-pass branch includes an exhaust gas recirculation by-pass valve (9) e.g. proportional type valve or on/off type valve, controlled by a pneumatic actuator (14), where the actuator comprises a thermostatic element (15) to adjust permeability of the bypass valve according to a temperature dependent of fluid temperature of a fluid cooling circuit (7) of an internal combustion engine (1). An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an exhaust gas recirculation circuit.
