The method involves progressive lateral translation of illumination axis in a plane, and searching appearance of target in its vision line by a carrier. The translating step is pursued as long as target is not appeared to the carrier. A directional target relative to displacement of target is appeared. Distance (LQ'), separating an eye's rotation center (Q') from reference surface (L) of a lens (12) is determined by triangulation calculation based on predetermined distance, predetermined angle (omega) and observed displacement of the target. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for determining a position of an eye's rotation center with respect to reference surface of lens presented in front of carrier comprising a maintain unit.
