The device has accelerometers (A1, A2) angularly shifted with respect to each other at 90 degrees along perpendicular axes (X2, Y2) in a symmetry plane (Ps) of a vehicle and forming a accelerometer benchmark (R2). The benchmark (R2) is shifted from a shifting angle (Theta) with respect to a main benchmark (R1) of the vehicle. The accelerometers supply instantaneous acceleration signals (M1, M2) of the vehicle, respectively with respect to the benchmark (R2). A logic controller (20) provides speed (Vv) of the vehicle from the signals provided by the accelerometers. An independent claim is also included for a method for estimation of speed of a motor vehicle.
