The method involves injecting fuel into a combustion chamber (16) of a direct injection internal combustion engine during an exhaust phase of the engine, to produce a mixture with exhaust gas. The mixture is partially introduced into an exhaust manifold (34). A portion of the mixture in the manifold is introduced into the chamber, and an intake fluid e.g. supercharged air, is introduced into the chamber, in vicinity of start of an intake phase. An exhaust valve (32) is closed before the end of the intake phase. An intake valve (26) is closed in the vicinity of the end of the intake phase.
