The method involves partially closing an exhaust line (26) using an orientable valve (36) to degrade effective efficiency of a heat engine (10) e.g. diesel engine, for rapidly increasing temperature of a heat transfer fluid so as to increase temperature of a passenger compartment in a motor vehicle. The heat transfer fluid circulates in a cooling circuit of the heat engine and in a unit heater, and the exhaust line exhausts combustion gas emitted by the engine. An independent claim is also included for a device for improving temperature rise in a passenger compartment of a vehicle equipped with a heat engine.
