The method involves temporarily modifying opening/closing cycle of exhaust valves (11) in combustion chambers (2) of a heat engine (1) based on an engine functioning parameter representing temperature of an exhaust gas from the engine, for increasing the temperature of the gas up to a preset threshold. Actuators (12) of the engine are controlled for opening or closing each exhaust valve independent of position of a crankshaft (7) of the engine.
