The method involves activating air-fuel mixture heating units in speeds and transient loads operating ranges of an internal combustion engine (1), where clapping combustion noise is generated in the operating ranges. The units are constituted by preheating units i.e. rapid type preheating plugs (8). The plugs are activated in a combustion chamber with respect to one of engine speed parameter, engine torque parameter, engine torque demand parameter, accelerator pedal compression parameter and accelerator pedal compression speed parameter. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine comprising heating units.
