The method involves varying richness of air/fuel mixture by implementing successive injection phases of rich and poor mixture irrespective of consumption or renewal of oxygen in exhaust line during purging of sulphur oxides, where average richness of rich and poor mixtures are greater than 1 on upstream surface of oxidation catalyst. Richness of air/fuel mixture is split during injection phases of rich and poor mixture with a frequency in the order of 1 hertz. The richness of mixture is raised by injecting the fuel by an additional fuel injector (10), in upstream of post treatment system. An independent claim is also included for a device for post-treatment of exhaust gas in an exhaust line of internal combustion engine.
