The method involves detecting the passage of the richness of air-fuel mixture of an internal combustion engine lower than one to the richness higher than one using a binary lambda sensor, where the sensor is arranged in the upstream of a nitrogen oxide trap integrated in an exhaust line of the engine. The richness is adjusted to a desired richness close to one and higher than one, by determining the quantity of fuel to be injected, using a cartography stored in a logic controller. An independent claim is also included for a system for regenerating nitrogen oxide trap integrated in an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
