The method involves assuring arrival of exhaust gas having richness higher than 1.05, on a predetermined zone i.e. rich area, of an inlet surface of a catalytic substrate (2) and arrival of exhaust gas having richness lower than 1, on a predetermined zone i.e. poor area, of the inlet surface of the substrate, during purging phases. Heterogeneous distribution of the richness of the exhaust gas is obtained in an inlet of the substrate, where richness ratio of the exhaust gas in an outlet of the substrate is lower than one. An independent claim is also included for an exhaust line of a combustion engine, comprising a substrate.
