The device has an orifice having an opening with length ranging between 5 mm and 70 mm. A hook (12) hooks the plate through the orifice in a hooking position. A spacer (14) is integrated to the hook and movable with respect to the hook. The spacer blocks the hook in the hooking position to prevent displacement of the hook in a direction perpendicular to an axis of the opening. A jaw (16) is integrated with the hook for sandwiching the plate, where the jaw is movable with respect to the hook. A blocking unit blocks the jaw on the hook and formed of a threaded rod (46) and a handle (54). An independent claim is also included for a method for raising a plate for closing a man hole.
