The system has control nuts (16B, 16C) associated with displaceable shift forks (12A, 12B). An interlocking device (20) is provided with an interlocking key (30) comprising locking tabs (32, 34) and a control finger (36) movably assembled between the tabs. The tabs lock the one of the nuts provided with a notch when the nut is opposite to one of the tabs, or to authorize the displacement of the nut when the nut is opposite to the control finger or when the control finger is opposite to the other nut. The former nut is actuated for engagement of a reverse gear and opposite to the other tab. An independent claim is also included for a gear box comprising a main shaft.
