PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology by which desired superconductive characteristics (for example, critical current characteristics) can be attained by improving a film forming process of an intermediate layer, and productivity of a superconducting wire rod can be improved by thinning of the intermediate layer. PSOLUTION: In the method of manufacturing a tape base material for superconducting wire rod 2 in which an orientation layer 21 is formed on a metal substrate 10 by an ion beam assisted vapor deposition method and a buffer layer 22 is formed on the orientation layer, lattice distortion of the orientation layer is alleviated by giving a prescribed thermal history to the orientation layer. To be concrete, the orientation layer is heated at 200C or more and 1,000C or less, preferably, at 400C or more and 600C or less to give a prescribed thermal history to the orientation layer.
