PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an isolator high in extinction ratio.;SOLUTION: Each of diffraction gratings 1, 2 in which a cross sectional shape has a uneven periodic structure is formed by processing a birefringent material layer formed on each of translucent substrates 4, 5. An isotropic transparent material 3 having a refractive index equal to the ordinary light refractive index of the birefringent material layer is filled in each of recessed parts of the diffraction gratings 1, 2 to form a diffraction grating having a polarizing property. A double layer diffraction type polarizer 100 is obtained by laminating the diffraction grating having the polarizing property and the translucent substrate 6 and is used as the isolator.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
