PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper sheet conveying direction switching device and a method of controlling the conveying direction capable of reducing the number of parts items such as a conveying passage, capable of reducing the manufacturing man-hours, and facilitated in the control for switching the conveying passage. PSOLUTION: The conveying direction switching device 1 includes direction changing drums 10 and 20, each direction changing drum having the same cylindrical shape having a length corresponding to the width direction of a bill to be conveyed. In outer peripheral surfaces of the direction changing drums 10 and 20, first to fourth openings 11-14, 21-24 are arranged, respectively, with an interval at 90 degree of a rotating angle, and controlled so that the rotating angle position becomes a predetermined phase angle. In the direction changing drum 10, the first opening 11 and the fourth opening 14 are connected to each other by a bill guide 19A forming a first curved passage, and the second opening 12 and the fourth opening 14 are connected to each other by a bill guide 19B forming a straight passage, and the third opening 13 and the fourth opening 14 are connected to each other by a bill guide 19C forming a second curved passage.
