PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely and quickly recognize objects which are similar in image pattern.;SOLUTION: Inputted learning image data is divided into blocks, and the combinations of codes of pixels constituting the blocks of the learning image are generated (104). Then, a simultaneous occurrence probability by a combination of pixels is computed, and a probability table which conforms to the combination of pixels is generated from the computed simultaneous occurrence probability (105) and then stored in a storage part (106). An inputted inputting image is divided into blocks, and the combinations of codes of pixels constituting the blocks of the inputting image are generated (110). Similarity is computed on the basis of both probability table and combinations of codes of each block in the input image data (111). In the similarity which conforms to objects, an object conforming to the maximum similarity is made to be a result of identification (112).
