PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grab bucket dredger which positively carries out thin-layer dredging by a grab bucket thereof, and to provide a dredging method using the same.;SOLUTION: The dredger 1 is mounted with a backhoe having a boom 7, an arm 8, and the grab bucket 3 connected to the arm 8. Further the dredger is provided with: a blade edge location detecting means for detecting the location of the blade edge 22 of a bucket body 21 of the grab bucket 3; a bucket ascending/descending means 40 for connecting the arm 8 and the grab bucket 3, and ascending and descending the grab bucket 3 with respect to the arm 8; and a grab bucket opening/closing control means for controlling the bucket ascending/descending means 40. By the operation of the grab bucket dredger, the location of the blade edge 22 is checked by the blade edge location detecting means to place the blade edge 22 on a subaqueous bottom, and while the bucket body 21 is closed, the grab bucket 3 is ascended and descended in a manner carrying out the thin-layer dredging of the subaqueous bottom based on the control of the grab bucket opening/closing control means.
