PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem wherein a processing quantity for tracking a subject increases, even though an imaging element capable of obtaining image information of high resolution is used to increase the accuracy of tracking. PSOLUTION: A subject tracking device comprises the imaging element 19, a reference image setting means 33 of setting a reference image 45 on the basis of the image output from the imaging element 19, a small reference image setting means 33 of setting a portion of the reference image 45 as a small reference image 46, and a tracking means 33 of tracking an object, corresponding to the reference image 45 by using the reference image 45 and the small reference image 46.
