PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article confirmation device and method, capable of preventing reduction of accuracy in real and false confirmation of an article.;SOLUTION: In registration of an article 40 such as a card, a predetermined range 50 on the surface of a reference article 40 of the registration object is imaged, a plurality of images of small areas (cells) 15 in which an unreproducible fine characteristic on the reference article surface is easy to recognize are selected from the taken image of the reference article 40 as characteristic images, any one of the taken images of the reference article 40, the plurality of selected characteristic images, and characteristic information showing the unreproducible fine characteristic on the article surface contained in each of the selected characteristic images and position information showing each position of the selected characteristic images are registered.
