PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for removing impurities including a water-soluble inorganic salt contained in a cold transfer medium or a cold storage material from the cold transfer medium or the cold storage material containing an aqueous quaternary ammonium salt solution as a main ingredient. PSOLUTION: The method is provided for removing impurities including a water-soluble inorganic salt contained in a cold transfer medium or a cold storage material from the cold transfer medium or the cold storage material containing an aqueous quaternary ammonium salt solution as a main ingredient, the method comprising a two layer-separation step of separating the cold transfer medium or the cold storage material into two layers, namely, a light liquid layer having a small specific gravity containing a quaternary ammonium salt and a water layer having a large specific gravity containing a water-soluble inorganic salt, and a water layer-removing step of removing the water layer from the cold transfer medium or the cold storage material separated into two layers.
