PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a converting furnace and its heating method where the inside of the furnace can be heated suitably at a low cost. PSOLUTION: A cylindrical space S is formed between the inside surface of the furnace 10 and the outside surface of a retort 12 at the converting furnace 2 to generate a converted gas in the retort 12 located in the furnace 10. A burner 13A to jet hot air into the furnace 10 and an exhaust outlet 60 to exhaust the hot air from the inside of the furnace 10 are provided. A direction to jet the hot air from the burner 13A and a direction to exhaust the hot air from the exhaust outlet 60 are as same as a rotating direction CCW which surrounds the retort 12.
