PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To broaden a frequency band by using a plurality of exciting light source groups varying in wavelengths and to flatten a wavelength characteristic by eliminating an intensity deviation of signal light.;SOLUTION: The Raman optical amplifier comprises signal light monitors 21a etc., which monitor the signal light intensity of each wavelength included in Raman amplified signal light, and an exciting light control circuit 15 which controls the exciting light intensity from exciting light sources 11a, etc., of each wavelength constituting the excitation means so as to correspond to the prescribed characteristic based on the deviation in the intensity of the signal light determined in the output light intensity deviation monitor circuit 22. The exciting light control circuit 15 includes a memory means 15c holding the total amount of the exciting light intensity of each of the multiplexed wavelengths before controlling the exciting light intensity corresponding to a prescribed characteristic and allocates the total amount of the exciting light intensity held in the memory means according to the deviation ratio in the intensity of each of the signal light determined in the output light intensity deviation monitor circuit, thereby controlling the exciting light intensity from the exciting light source of each of the wavelengths.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
