PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide negative electrode active material for structuring a lithium secondary battery having a large capacity and excellent cycle characteristics, and to provide a simple manufacturing method thereof, and to provide a low- priced lithium secondary battery having high safety, a large capacity and excellent cycle characteristics by using this negative electrode active material to form an aqueous lithium secondary battery. SOLUTION: As the negative electrode active material, a lithium-vanadium compound oxide having LiV2 O4 as the basic composition and having the spinel structure is used. A manufacturing method thereof includes a raw material mixing process for obtaining the raw material mixture by mixing the lithium compound as a lithium source, a vanadium compound as a vanadium source and a carbon material, and a baking process for obtaining the lithium-vanadium compound oxide by baking the raw material mixture.
