PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an intercalation material capable of giving preferable properties such as the lowering of oxygen permeability to a matrix polymer. ;SOLUTION: A surface modified layered silicate material has multi-charged onium ion in place of plural interlayer anions on the surface of a platelet inside part by intercalation and contains a laminated layer of clay silicate platelets formed so that the interval between the adjacent layers of the layer materials is widened to at least about 3 , preferably at least to about 15 , usually at least up to 10 , preferably up to 15 and usually 15-20 , for example, up to 18 and the composite material contains the matrix polymer and the layer silicate material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
