PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface modified stainless steel wherein the corrosion resistance, particularly, stress corrosion cracking is prevented by modifying the surface of stainless steel used in a severe environment, such as piping of nuclear power plant or chemical plant, and to provide a method of treating the surface modified stainless steel. PSOLUTION: Provided is the surface modified stainless steel wherein the corrosion resistance, particularly, stress corrosion cracking is prevented by diffusing and permeating boron, boron and fluorine, or oxygen with them in the ionic state to the surface layer part of the stainless steel to be treated to form a boron-containing, or a boron and fluorine-containing or a boron and fluorine-containing oxygen base coated layer.
