PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for simply and easily measuring and evaluating gray scale reproduction characteristics of an electronic image photographing device. PSOLUTION: Disclosed is a gray scale reproduction characteristic grasping method of the electronic image photographing device that uses photographic setting data in which exposure conditions prescribing quantities of light input to a photodetection sensor of the electronic image photographing device and exposure quantities for photography under the exposure conditions are correlated with each other. The gray scale reproduction characteristic grasping method includes: an image data generation step of generating image data including gray scale values of pixels by setting an exposure condition selected from the photographic setting data to the electronic image photographing device and then photographing a subject; and a gray scale reproduction range data generation step of generating gray scale reproduction range data by generating correspondence data of the exposure quantity of the image data acquired from the photographic setting data and the gray scale value of a pixel of interest of the image data, selecting an exposure quantity when the gray scale value of a pixel increases from a minimum value and an exposure quantity when the gray scale value gets saturated at a maximum value from corresponding data, and finding the difference between the both.
