The present invention relates to a cyclobutane-1,1-dicarboxylate complex of platinum in the + II oxidation step and to a crystal solvate thereof comprising structural motif I or general formula II represented by structural formula [Pt (L) 2, (cbdc)] or formula III represented by structural formula [Pt (L) (L´) (cbdc)], where (cbdc) is a cyclobutane-1,1-dicarboxylate dianion, where L and L 'represent N6-benzyladenine derivatives of formula IV bound to a platinum atom of the motif V via any nitrogen atom, adenine independently selected from N 1, N 3, N 6, N 7 or N 9, depending on the degree of substitution of the molecules, and wherein R 1, R 2, R 3 and R 4 are of particular significance. The invention further relates to a process for the preparation of said complexes, pharmaceutical compositions containing such complexes and their use in the treatment of cancer.
