The invention of this application pertains to a chimeric Cry2A protein, made from amino acid sequences of Cry2Aa and Cry2Ac proteins of B. thuringiensis and described a method for obtaining the same. In the present invention, the Cry2Ac, Cry2Aa and chimeric Cry2A proteins showed about 2, 11 and 22-fold more toxicity, respectively, than the Cry2Ab protein to H. armigera. The cryJAc and cry2Ab genes are used in Bt- cotton transgenic plants in the USA w,here the main targets are Heliothis virescens and Helicoverpa zea. In India, Helicoverpa armigera, the main target ofBt-cotton, is found to be less susceptible to Cry2Ab. Hence, the gene encoding Cry2Aa or Cry2Ac or chimeric Cry2A protein of this invention will be useful to develop Bt-transgenic plants suitable for Indian scenario.
