A security element for documents of value and methods for producing asecurity element and a document of value are disclosed. The security element,preferably for documents of value, comprises at least one area (12) with adiffraction structure, which under specific viewing conditions reconstructs adiffractive image, wherein the area (12) has subareas (14), which do not takepart in the reconstruction of the diffractive image, and which represent arecognizable information, characterized in that the information represented bythe subareas (14) is recognizable substantially only under the specific viewingconditions of the diffractive image.
