Disclosed is an isolated xenotropic murine leukaemia virus related virus (XMRV) derived from prostate tissue of an individual with a prostate tumour. Also disclosed is methods of detecting isolated xenotropic murine leukaemia virus related virus, methods of identifying agents that inhibit xenotropic murine leukaemia virus related virus and its use the manufacture of medicaments for inducing an immune response and treating prostate cancer.
