A method of obtaining seed or settled larvae from bivalve molluscs and subsequently cultivating the same, is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: (a) placing one or more larval brood carrying bivalve molluscs and a settlement media into a container, (b) placing the container in an aerated fluid suitable for the settlement of the larval brood, (c) allowing the, or part of, the larval brood to settle on the settlement media, and (d) once the larval brood has settled on the settlement media, placing the settlement media in a farm and growing the molluscs.
