Disclosed is a method of managing timberland to increase the amount of crop produced in a designated area of timberland over a designated period of time, comprising: (a) planting a softwood tree crop in first, second and third rows, wherein the softwood tree crop has a tree spacing between adjacent trees and a row spacing between adjacent rows; (b) planting an energy crop in the row spacing, wherein the energy crop is a regenerating lignocellulosic energy crop, wherein the row spacing is selected to provide adequeate spacing between the adjacent rows and is between about 15 and about 25 feet; and (c) periodically harvesting the energy crop for a predetermined number of harvests and harvesting the softwood tree crop such that the final value of the softwood tree crop will be maximized.
