Disclosed is a solar hot water system which includes one or more solar collectors for exposure to the sun for extraction of solar energy. The system also includes a hot water storage tank sealed to atmosphere, a supply conduit interconnecting the solar collector(s) and the hot water storage tank for transfer of heated liquid from the solar collector(s) to the hot water storage tank and a return conduit interconnecting the hot water storage tank and the solar collector(s) for return of relatively cold liquid to the solar collector(s). The system further includes a heat exchange coil with coil windings connected to a hot water supply or connected between the supply conduit and the return conduit. All of the heat exchange coil windings are located in a top half of the hot water storage tank. Hot water is received at an outlet either directly from the heat exchange coil or from the hot water storage tank.
