The invention relates to the technology for the production of pigment titanium dioxide from ilmenite concentrates, particularly to the treatment of chromium-bearing ilmenite concentrates. A process for the preparation of pigment titanium dioxide from chromium-bearing ilmenite concentrates comprises decomposition of chromium-bearing ilmenite concentrates by sulphuric acid at heating of reaction mixture with direct steam to 80 °C, reduction of the prepared solutions, and coagulation of sludge in solution with flocculant in amount of 0.39-0.40 kg/t of titanium dioxide with the further treatment of solutions from sludge to achievement of solution thickness of 1.52-1.54 g/cm, crystallization, evaporation, hydrolysis of titanyl sulphate, filtration, baking. The use of the invention allows preparing a pigment of titanium dioxide from chromium-bearing ilmenite concentrates, whereby maximally remove chrome compounds from the process, achieve maximum ilmenite decomposition degree, provide high quality of production and expand the raw material base for the production of pigment titanium dioxide.
