THE COPPER ETCHANT IS REACTED WITH SODIUM HYDROXIDE TO PRODUCE COPPER OXIDE CAKE FORM AS AN INTERMEDIATE, AND THEN REACTED WITH SULPHURIC ACID TO PRODUCE CONCENTRATED COPPER SULPHATE PENTAHYDRATE LIQUID. THE LIQUID IS A SUPERSATURATED I 0 SOLUTION, WHICH CAN BE READILY CRYSTALLIZED ONCE COOLED DOWN, KITHOUT HAVING TO EVAPORATE THE LIQUID FOR CONCENTRATION. THE CRYSTALLIZATION TAKES PLACE IN A COOLING CRYSTALLIZER WHERE CRITICAL FACTORS SUCH AS RATE OF COOLING, AGITATION RATE AND COPPER SLDPHALE CONCENTRATION ARE CONTROLLED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE COPPER SULPHATE CRYSTAL WITH CONSISTENT PARTICLE SIZE, RANGING FROM 20 TO 50 MESH. THE INVENTION ENABLES AT LEAST 95OF THE COPPER IN THE COPPER ETCHANT WASTE TO BE RECOVERED AS HIGH PURITY COPPER SULPHATE PENTAHYDRATE.
