The use of naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic monoimides of the formula I ** ** see formula wherein R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, heterocycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl and R2 is cyano, -C (O ) NR5R5a or phenyloxy which carries one or more substituents selected from C1-C12 alkyl, C1-C12 alkoxy, -COOR6, -SO3R6, halogen, hydroxyl, carboxyl, cyano, -CONR5R5a, and -NHCOR5; R5 and R5a each independently of the other hydrogen, C1-C18, aryl or heteroaryl, aryl and heteroaryl each is unsubstituted or bears one or more substituents selected from C1-C8 alkyl, C1-C8 alkoxy, hydroxyl, carboxyl, and cyano; and R6 is hydrogen or C1-C8 alkyl; to protect organic material selected from plastics, polymer dispersions, paints, photographic emulsions, photographic layers, paper, cosmetic products, pharmaceutical products, cleaning products, and foodstuffs from the damaging effects of light.
