A method for diagnosing or monitoring systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) comprising: (a) determining, in a blood sample from the individual the level of component C4d complement pathway on the surface of a T lymphocyte or a B lymphocyte in the sample, and (b) comparing said determinations with, respectively, the level of component C4d complement pathway on the surface of a T lymphocyte or B lymphocyte control, wherein an increase in the level of C4d complement component indicates that the individual has systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
