A method of smoothing a variable level with time of a signal, the method comprising: estimating (33) having a varying probability density with time variable level time signal; computing (34) the probability of a variable level with time smoothing above using the estimated probability density variable with time; adapting (35) a smoothing filter in response to the probability; and applying (32) the smoothing filter adapted to time-varying level to generate the time-varying level smoothing.
