A method of forming blanks for contact lenses, comprising: polymerizing a monomer mixture in the presence of a non-reactive aprotic polar diluent to produce a polymer, wherein said polymer comprises a crosslinking agent incorporated and in a greater than 99 mole percent of 2,3-dihydroxypropyl methacrylate incorporated amount; and mechanical formation of blanks for contact lenses from the polymer.
