Use of N-benzoyl-staurosporine in the manufacture of a drug for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy with reduced hepatotoxicity in a selected patient population, where the patient population is selected based on the genotype of the patients in an IL1A genetic locus predictive of hepatotoxicity, where the genetic locus IL1A predictive of the genotype of hepatotoxicity is: (i) a homozygous C genotype, at position 549 in the promoter of the IL1A gene, as defined by GenBank reference number X03833, and ( ii) a homozygous G genotype, at position 6282 in exon 5 of the IL1A gene, as defined by GenBank reference number X03833.
