A surgical portal apparatus (200) comprising: a housing (102); a portal member (202) extending from the housing (102), whose portal member (202) is dimensioned for positioning within tissue, including the portal member (202) having a longitudinal opening (206) to allow passage of a surgical object: one disposed within the housing (102) and defining an opening (116) formed therethrough and which is adapted to establish a sealing relation substantially with the surgical object introduced iris seal (104) within the opening (116), the iris seal (104) includes a plurality of blade members (130) for movement to control a dimensioning of the opening (116) in response to the introduction of a surgical object; the leaf members of the iris seal are fixed pivotally relative to the housing, and are intended for pivotal movement between a first relative position, substantially open, and a second relative position, substantially closed, wherein the apparatus further comprises : an activation mechanism in association relationship with the leaf members and comprising a motor (134), the trigger mechanism can be activated in response to the introduction of a surgical object to cause the leaf members (130) move between the first relative position and the second relative position; resistive circuits (128) in association relationship with the motor (14) and for detecting an increased load BOUT motor (134) and to stop said motor (134) to thereby releasably holding members sheet (130) in the second relative position; and a switch (136) located within the housing (102), the switch (136) is adapted to be engaged by the surgical object during introduction thereof into the housing (102) to activate the motor (134) and thereby cause movement of the blade members (130) of the iris seal (104) from the first position relative to the second relative position.
