A process for the formation of a composite filter media, having diatomaceous earth as an adsorbent material and polyethylene powder as a water-insoluble thermoplastic binder in water, the filtrate compound devoid of cellulose and a thermoplastic binder being said, wherein said binder relation to adsorbent material is 1: 1 to 1: 3 by weight, which method includes: a) dry blending the binder with the adsorbent material to form a composite filter material dry blending b) using a pneumatic press to compress the filter material comprises dry mixing to 6,89- 22,39 bar (100-325 psi) to 50-70% of the original volume of the composite filter material; c) place the composite filter material dry mixing into a mold and heating to a temperature at which said binder melts or at least partially softens to thermally bond said compressed composite filter media together; wherein said compressing step occurs before and / or during said heating step.
