The invention concerns a method (200) and system (100) for creating a subsetof channels with programming from a plurality of channels and can include thesteps of: receiving (210) a plurality of channels, wherein the plurality ofchannels comprises at least one channel with programming; encoding (212) atleast a portion of predetermined number of channels from the plurality ofchannels to provide a corresponding encoded signal for each of thepredetermined number of channels; processing (214) each of the correspondingemcoded signals to determine wich of the predetermined number of channelscontain programming to provide the subset of channels with programming; andstoring (216) the subset of channels into memory. the invention can alsoinclude the step of analyzing at least a portion of an audio signal in thepredetermined channels to determine which of the predetermined channels todetermine which of the predetermined channels contain programming.
