A fastening system (10) is provided that includes a fastener having a pin (24)member (24) with a lock groove (26) and crest geometry that is optimized toreceive swaged material from collars (14) of materials of different strengthsfor securing workpieces (18, 20) for different load applications. The lockgrooves (26) have the longest width required for collars (14) of lowerstrength for one application or greater strength for a second application andthe crests have the longest width required for collars of greater strength forthe second application whereby satisfactory clamp and tensile loads andresistance to failure will result when the lock grooves (26) are filled withcollar materials of different strengths. The lock groove (26) and crestgeometry is of a uniform construction for the plurality of applications withpin members of a common diameter. Certain collars (14) of different materialshave similar outside diameters for installation by a tool (48) having a swageanvil (56) with a uniform swage cavity that swages the collars (14) into thelock grooves for securing workpieces in shear, shear/tension, shear compositeand shear/tension composite applications. A method of designing a fastener isalso provided that has a uniform lock groove and crest geometry for use in theplurality of applications.
